ABU FANOS (written by: YZ10)
*Car driving noise*
11/12/2005, one month since winter entered and the weather started getting cooler in the Middle East, 4 friends decided for a trip in the middle of the desert. They started moving in 8:30 PM. It took them an hour or two on their journey until they reached a hill in the middle of the thick sand.
Khalid: “Okay, this place looks good for sitting.”
Khidir: “Alright, let’s drop the blanket, tea, and cards."
Ismail: “Ya salam, we're going to rest here until the sunrise.”
Osman: “We need to make activity for the midnight.”
Osman: “Hmmmmm, how about we make a small trip at midnight in the desert after we finish our tea?”
Khalid: “Oh, aren't you guys afraid of getting lost in the desert or something bad happening to you all?”
Ismail: “Habi don’t be afraid; we are men who are never afraid of these things."
Khidir: “Ya, nothing bad will happen to us.”
Khalid: “Okay, as you wish, I'll go and make you some tea.”
Hours pass, boys enjoy the sitting. Khalid sits by the tea stove, carefully throwing in the cardamom and spices, watching the tea boil and evaporate, adding cups of sugar, and pouring the hot tea into the glass teacups.
and on other sides you have the rest of the group playing cards, slam the ground with ace cards, screaming, laughing, swearing, and singing.
Khalid finished the tea and brought the tray to his friends and gave a cup to each one. They took one sip and were amazed at its wonderful taste.
Khidir: “Mashallah, Khalid, this is the best tea I ever drink.”
Khalid: “Thanks, Khdir."
Time passes, the clock ticks every minute, and now it is 3:00 AM, which means they will start to prepare for their trip.
Osman: “Okay, the time now is 3 AM; time for real action."
Khidir: “Yo, Khalid, will you stay here or come with us?"
Khalid: "Nah, I'm good. I will stay here to guard our place.”
*car noise *
And so, the three boys went on an adventure in the middle of the desert, discovering the area in the middle of the playful darkness, the car rubbing against the sand softly and quietly, and the boys looking right and left searching for something that would amaze them.
and suddenly...Osman: "YOOOOOO, LOOK, A LIGHT.”
A mirage of the light shone in the middle of the sand, drawing the attention of our travelers as it appeared and disappeared sometimes, doubting the appearance of this light.
Khidir: "Do you think this light is like a mirage?”
Ismail: “Nah, that’s just a random guy who wants to prank us.”
Khidir: “Why would someone want to prank us this time?"
Osman: “I don’t know; let's go to the light and find out.”
As soon as they tried to reach the source, the light disappeared, and they were surprised by its disappearance. Some thought it was a prank, and some said it was a mirage.
Osman: “Look, the light appeared on the other side." Khidir: “That’s weird; it made me more curious to know about this light.”
And so they keep doing that left, right, and every side they see, and every time they went near, they started losing the way they came back from, and the place they were in started getting creepier.
One, then two, then three dead animals start showing with bones scattered around the square, and dead bushes are gradually increasing in number.
Owls appear with their honey eyes and woody brown feathers watching them; you are almost afraid of them with their camouflage forms in the blackness of the night, the shine of their large eyes, and the loud sound of their hooting.
Ismail: “Okay, I think we reached a dead Steppe area; I don’t feel okay with owls watching us and dead animals around us." Osman: “What's the matter, ismail? Don’t you say you aren't afraid?” Ismail: "I'm still not afraid of it, but I think we should return soon; I don’t feel okay.”
Khidir: “Ya, the gas starts getting lower and will end so--”
*GUN SHOT NOISE*
* They start shouting random Arabic words.
*Car crashed in the sand*
Suddenly the sound of a gunshot was heard, and the car flipped over the hill and down to the bottom. The car collides with the bushes, making the force of the fall less and less; the car falls on a soft spot in sand.
The boys were alive, but they had wounds and broken bodies. They were barely able to walk and get out of the car. Blood covered their shirts, walking with a broken leg like zombies from movies and games.
Khidir: “Is everyone okay?”
Osman: “My arm and knee are hurting me but I am okay." Ismail: "I can’t feel my arms.”
A light suddenly started flashing from the farewell: “NO, NO AGAIN, AM TIRED FROM THIS LIGHT.”
Ismail: “We lost in the middle of dessert, and our car is broken, and we can't be able to return to our camp.”
The light starts approaching little by little and starts growing.
Khidir: “Uhhhhhh, I think the light is starting to move toward us.”
Osman: “I'm very exhausted and can’t make any reaction.”
Young youth look at the light coming towards them, exhausted, tired, in pain, unable to move, accepting whatever fate God has written for them.
The light approaching more with a metal transportation machine behind the light was a Hilux Toyota with one broken lightbulb on the right side, a noise of a car engine with sands splashing on both sides, pressing down every bush that passes in front of them, and the sound of a radio that plays Azan. As soon as the car approached them, two bushes away, it veered to the right and stopped.
The door opened, the driver’s shoe appeared under the door and touched the ground.
A tall, broad-shouldered man with a wound over his clear eye approaches them, his head covered with an Arab shawl, wearing a white jalabiya with a brown sheepskin vest, and carrying a rifle in his right hand. He took a deep breath and shouted, “WHO ARE YOU?”
Everyone is afraid to speak, but Khidir takes a step in front and starts speaking: “We are travelers who were wandering at night, and we got lost in the desert.”.
The hunter starts approaching Khidir, pointing his rifle to his stomach, starts analyzing them to check for any sign of danger, moves his eyes to every side, and walks around them slowly.
Hunter: “You guys are telling me that you are travelers who got lost in the steppe and you aren’t coming for my flock.”
Ismail: “Yeah, we didn’t come for your flock; we don’t even know where we are.”
Osman: “Our car is crashed, and we can’t return to our camp.”
Hunter: “Mmm, you guys are wounded, and I cannot let you come back with these wounds.”
Hunter: “I will let you hop in my car and go to my house to add bandage and clean your clothes.”
Hunter: "The name is Ya'qub, by the way."
Khidir: “Nice to meet you, sir. I am Khidir, and this is Osman and Ismail."
Ismail: “We have a fourth member who is waiting for us there."
Ya'qub: “Don’t worry, I know the whole place and every corner; just show me what your place looks like, and I will take you there."
They arrived at Ya’qub’s farm, and he provided them with all the services and first aid and returned them to their camp.
Khalid saw the gang coming with bandages and without their car; he was worried that something bad had happened to them, and they explained the story to him. The sun rose, and Ya’qub got into his car, raised his hand high, and bid them farewell with a wide smile on his face. He then disappeared, and we never heard anything about him again.
